Science
At Downham Church of England Primary School, our science curriculum is carefully designed to foster a deep and comprehensive understanding of the world around us. It ignites curiosity, fosters a love of discovery, and empowers our children to become confident and informed citizens of the future.
Our engaging and hands-on science curriculum, which fully aligns with the National Curriculum, encourages children to explore the world around them, ask questions, and develop a strong understanding of key scientific concepts.
We aim to nurture a sense of wonder and excitement about science, helping pupils understand how it shapes our daily lives and contributes to our knowledge of the universe. Through carefully planned lessons, practical investigations, and real-world connections, we strive to make science accessible, enjoyable, and relevant for every child.
Our school vision, “Inspiring all to soar to new heights,” is central to our approach to science. By fostering a love of learning and curiosity about the world, we empower children to reach their full potential in science and beyond. We aim to equip them with critical thinking skills, scientific literacy, and a passion for discovery that will enable them to pursue their interests and contribute meaningfully to society.
What Your Child Will Learn
Our science curriculum is structured around key scientific disciplines, ensuring a broad and balanced understanding as your child progresses through the school:
Biology
Children learn about living things, including plants, animals, and humans. They explore life processes, habitats, and how living organisms interact with each other.
Chemistry
Pupils investigate materials, their properties, and how they change. This includes exploring solids, liquids, gases, and simple chemical changes.
Physics
Children discover the fundamental principles of energy, forces, motion, light, sound, and electricity.
Working Scientifically
Pupils develop essential scientific skills such as observing, questioning, predicting, planning investigations, collecting and analysing data, and drawing conclusions. These skills are embedded across all areas of science learning.
Science and Our School’s 5Cs
At Downham C of E Primary School, our core values – Courage, Collaboration, Creative Thinking, Creativity, and Challenge – are embedded in all aspects of school life, including science.
Courage
We encourage children to take risks in their learning, ask “what if?”, and understand that making mistakes is an important part of scientific discovery.
Collaboration
Many science activities involve working together, which helps pupils develop teamwork, communication skills, and the ability to share ideas and learn from one another.
Creative Thinking
Science provides many opportunities for creative problem-solving, designing investigations, and thinking critically to explain scientific phenomena.
Creativity
From designing models to presenting findings in innovative ways, science allows children to express their understanding through a range of creative approaches.
Challenge
Our science curriculum provides appropriate levels of challenge, encouraging children to deepen their understanding, tackle complex questions, and persevere in their investigations.
