History
At Downham Church of England Primary School, our History curriculum is designed to help pupils see the past as an interconnected story, exploring significant events, people, and cultures both in Britain and around the world. Children learn to understand how societies have changed over time, the causes and consequences of key events, and the ways in which individuals and communities have shaped the world. Our curriculum encourages pupils to make connections across time and place, highlighting diversity and the shared patterns that link human experiences globally.
We believe that a high-quality History education helps pupils develop a coherent knowledge of the past and an appreciation of how it influences the present. Through studying significant individuals, events, and cultural developments, pupils are inspired to recognise that they too can make a positive impact on the world.
Downham’s 5C core values are embedded throughout our History curriculum:
-
Critical Thinking – Pupils analyse historical evidence and sources, asking questions and weighing the reliability of information.
-
Collaboration – Sharing ideas and discussing theories helps pupils develop a deeper understanding of the past.
-
Courage – Pupils are encouraged to express their ideas and interpretations confidently, exploring different perspectives.
-
Creativity – Children present their learning in a variety of ways, including drama, technology, art, and assemblies.
-
Challenge – Pupils explore complex historical concepts, compare eras and cultures, and begin to understand global connections across time.
Through this curriculum, children develop curiosity, resilience, and a sense of perspective. By the end of their primary journey, pupils leave Downham C of E Primary School equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to explore the past, understand the present, and consider the future.
